Never in a million years would I think I had too much stuff.  I knew I always had everything one could possibly need, and in fact, more often than not, I would bring everything needed for a cookout, party, camping trip, event, or tailgate.  I had every imaginable gadget, tool, piece of software, hardware, or cable imaged.  Prepared?  Yes!  Clutter?  Nope!  Hoarding?  Absolutely not!

Ok, I guess that’s where the line should be drawn though.  I’ve been through several moves, in fact I just recently moved (less than 12 months ago) from a 2,000+ sq ft house into a 1,053 sq. ft house.  The move, not super memorable, but recalling I had plenty of time to think through a move, gave me ample time to sort through things, figure out what I wanted to move and what I didn’t want to move.  I took several car loads of items to the dump, to Goodwill, schools, and other charity locations.  I still had a large 26′ truck from U-Haul to move everything down, in addition to two trips in a 6’x12′ enclosed trailer, four open trailer loads to move the motorcycle, then the riding lawnmower, and more boxes/tubs.

Fast forward several months later, and here I am again, contemplating another move, both for work reasons and to finally fulfill a newfound adventure of being a full-time, working RV traveler.  Except I’m faced again with the daunting task of going from 2,000+ sq. ft. into a possible, if I’m lucky, 400 sq. ft.  That means I’m looking 20% of my entire house I moved from a year ago.

Ok, so how am I going to do it? doing it?

I started room by room, immediately sorting items into several piles:

  • Toss – these are things that have no value to others and that I wouldn’t miss.
  • Donate – these are items that are gently used that maybe someone else could have some use for
  • Sell – certain items, furniture or décor for example, that I can get nominal value for.  I’ll set this money aside and use for the RV purchase, trips, etc.

I’ll stop right here and say what a mixed feeling of thoughts!  I first cannot believe the amount of money I’ve spent on things that I haven’t touched in years, especially things that haven’t been touched since my move into this house just under a year ago.  Think of all the money I’d have in the bank without these purchases.  Ok, not much I can do about that now for the past, except not to repeat that!

On that note, here is a quick glimpse into one of the piles I’m working my way through for donations.  This includes laptops, tablets, office supplies, school supplies, games, dishes, and the list goes on!

(Coming soon :))

Thankfully for me, unfortunately for the family, I’ve been able to gift lots of items over to the family so I can still keep these in the family.  It almost seems each week I’m finding something new to put in a bag and take over to the family.

Certainly, some things you hate to get rid of for nothing, drop the price so low, or give away, and yes – it is extremely hard to part with some things.  One downside I’m having right now is I’m fighting a need to move, not having a RV currently (which would be nice to start putting some items into the RV vs. storage), and several unknowns for the future of my current job location.  For now, it’s pushing forward and going back through every item.  Art work on the wall, items in the closet, dressers, furniture, and clothes.

This process is no where near finished, but I have definitely made some progress.  Each day after work I’ll chip away a bit more, and soon enough – I’ll have just the right amount of “stuff” to keep one happy and have the necessities to work and RV.
